This large 1930s house on the South Downs lay derelict for several years prior to Design ACB’s appointment. We were asked to refurbish the existing house and design two extensions to create an annex and enlarged living areas.
Our approach to this unique project has been to refurbish the existing house and to preserve its character whilst adding new accommodation in a contemporary extension through the use of different materials and form. Juxtaposing elements in this way clearly distinguishes between new and existing built forms and serves to expose the history of the building. One of the new extensions envelopes the rear and side of the building and seeks to improve circulation by linking new and old. The other extension enlarges an internal garage to create a self-contained annex.
The project was completed December 2010.
