Design ACB was appointed to undertake the design of a bespoke one-off house on the site of a large residential plot in Whitchurch. The proposals will see the existing dwelling, a detached brick bungalow, replaced by a spacious, environmentally sustainable and energy efficient family home.
The proposed ‘L’ shape scheme is conceived as a composition of two elements and features a steel frame, full height glazing and vertical timber cladding. The first element is a highly insulated timber box, containing the sleeping accommodation, which floats over a plinth defining the living spaces. The second element is a single storey timber frame structure set perpendicular to the two storey form which accommodates an integral garage and ancillary spaces.
The proposal is designed to create the highest quality of internal spaces. The generous ground floor open-plan living area features a double height void and is glazed floor to ceiling along the south creating a light, contemporary space. The internal spaces connect with the garden through the use of large sliding doors which open onto a sheltered courtyard-style garden.
