Design ACB were appointed to undertake the remodeling of an existing Victorian terraced property in Battersea. The proposals include the full basement excavation of both house and garden to accommodate a cinema room, gymnasium, sauna, and playroom. A new second-floor mansard and a glazed ground-floor side return will also be added to create 300sqm of accommodation.
The ground floor extension was conceived as a composition of two elements; a dark rendered ‘box’ which frames the garden and a glazed ‘slot’ adjacent to the boundary wall. Internally this slot takes the form of a glass roof to the side extension, a glass floor in the kitchen and a staircase beyond. The slot continues into the garden as a lightwell offering natural light to the basement below.
Internal walls have been removed at ground floor level to create a large continuous open plan space while the kitchen extends into the garden visually linking inside and out.
The project received planning consent in June 2012.
