Design ACB were appointed by Overton Primary School and Agile ICT to investigate options for the enclosure of an external courtyard and for various building improvements to their 1960s SCOLA system-built school.

The under-used courtyard represents a wonderful opportunity to create a new ‘heart’ and central space for the school. The new double-height space will be multi-use, incorporating a library area and an ICT suite at mezzanine level. Circulation at ground-floor level will also be improved by way of the enclosure but will double up as ‘break-out’ teaching space. A ‘reading pod’ located under the staircase provides a more intimate space for small reading groups whilst making the most of the available area.

The enclosure will incorporate a series of standardised circular roof lights, which offer a cost-efficient and fun solution providing an even distribution of daylight across the space.

Design ACB are also looking at options for the refurbishment of the main reception area and front entrance thereby improving the overall entrance sequence and first impressions of the school.
