This site is located adjacent to a busy street on the outskirts of central Southampton, and is surrounded by a mix of commercial and light industrial usage.

The design is conceived as a series of blocks each positioned around the perimeter of the site to create a walled garden for residents, sheltered from the noise and activity of the site’s urban setting. Individual blocks range in scale from 3 to 5 storeys; this size was determined by the adjacent buildings and the overall contribution to the street scene. A commercial unit has been retained within the proposal offering the opportunity to add a valuable resource to the area.

The introduction of such a dense residential scheme to the local area required extensive pre-application consultation with local residents, the local planning department and the city design champion. Our scheme evolved through this dialogue, aided by the use of sketch views and physical models which allowed us to demonstrate the clarity and quality of our proposed scheme to all statutory consultees and engaged parties.

The project was granted planning permission in the spring of 2010.
