| Project | Extension to Grade II Listed Building |
| Status | Completed 2011 - Photography by Andy Matthews |
This project involved the extension of a popular Grade II Listed public house in central Winchester. An existing and unpromising enclosed courtyard to the rear of the building housed an open sided covered area and a cluster of stores and bins. Our scheme replaced this covered seating area with a contemporary new extension allowing additional trading throughout the year.
The two main challenges of this scheme where the need to to preserve the unique character of the Listed Building within the Conservation Area setting and the need to minimise disruption to the pub during construction. The addition was therefore designed with a sympathetic and traditional palette of materials (slate, timber and render) but it adopts modern building techniques of pre-fabrication and an associated contemporary aesthetic to help distinguish between new and existing built elements.
The extension incorporates the existing ground bearing slabs in addition to a brick gable which supports the a new roof. A frameless glass slot on the new facade has been positioned to avoid concealment of an existing sash window while the new volume improves the internal layout by reconnecting the bar and lounge area with the kitchen and toilet facilities.
The project was competed in November 2011.
